The stalk-eyed fly looks fairly normal as it emerges from its pupa. Then it blows air bubbles up inside its head and along the eyestalks - like blowing up the world’s weirdest balloon. It does this to make itself look more attractive to other stalk-eyed flies.

The Very Unusual Stalk-eyed Fly

The bombardier beetle has evolved a special way to avoid being eaten. It mixes two chemicals together in its tummy which then explode out as a mixture of a protective chemical and boiling water. It has to be careful not to burn itself!
